Chinese as Heritage language (CHL) Intensive Track (马立平 Ma Liping textbooks, grades 1 - high school)
The CHL Intensive program is for students who have a Mandarin Chinese-speaking environment
at home, who already have strong Chinese language abilities, especially in understanding and
speaking, who will have time to review and challenge themselves. The recommended amount of
homework and study time is 40 minutes a day for at least 4-5 times per week. It is also
recommended that parents assist the students in their studies.
The suggested age to start this program is 6 years old in grade 1. This program teaches how to
speak, read, and write Mandarin every academic year as the student advances from grade 1
through high school.
The 1st to 10th
grade CHL program uses
马立平 Ma Liping textbooks (简体版 simplified characters version)
as curriculum. This curriculum has the following characteristics:
- Learn Chinese characters first, then learn Pinyin
- Learn how to recognize Chinese characters first, then learn how to write the characters
- Learn Chinese reading first, then learn Chinese writing
- Using stories that are fun and well liked by children
- Use multimedia (eg. CD-ROM) as part of homework to make the assignments more enjoyable
for students.
The recommended age to start this program is 6 years old.
TIME: Running from September to May on Sunday afternoons
