CHL Program - Chinese as a Heritage Language

The CHL program is for students who have a Mandarin Chinese-speaking environment at home and thus can understand and speak at least basic Mandarin. The CHL Program starts from 4 year olds and continues all the way through high school. For each academic year, the program provides skills in speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin. The CHL Kindergarten program uses the teaching materials developed by MLCCC. The curriculum combines Mandarin language learning with songs, crafts, and other fun activities. The recommended age range for the Kindergarten class is 4 to 5 years old.

The 1st to 10th grade CHL program uses Ma Liping text books as curriculum. This curriculum has the following characteristics:

  • Learn Chinese characters first, then learn Pinyin
  • Learn how to recognize Chinese characters first, then learn how to write the characters
  • Learn Chinese reading first, then learn Chinese writing
  • Using stories that are fun and well liked by children
