- The Chinese Musical Instrument
Class and Band Introduction Series (II)
As many of you aware, we are planning to open a Chinese
Musical Instrument Class and Band this coming fall. The instruments we are planning
to have in our band are: Yang Qin (Chinese Dulcimer), ErHu (Chinese Violin), Ruan
(Chinese Lute), DiZi (Chinese Bamboo Flute), and Sheng (Chinese Reed Instrument).
Students learning DiZi can also learn HuLuSi and Xiao at a later time.
To help you understand the musical instruments, our class teacher and band director
Steve Cheng would like to introduce one instrument each week. This week, we continue
the introduction with Sheng.
Sheng, a Chinese reed instrument, is one of the oldest Chinese musical instruments
with over 3000 years of history dating back to 1100 BC.
As a multi-reed mouth organ, Sheng was an important instrument in ancient Chinese
music, popular in the imperial palace and in court processions. Today, Sheng has
evolved into a rich expressive solo and orchestra instrument, not only plays powerful
tunes, but also beautiful and lyrical melodies.
In a Chinese orchestra, sheng plays as an ideal fusion of all other instruments,
enriching the sound of the orchestra. It is also a good accompaniment instrument
for other instruments, especially for DiZi, the Chinese Flute.
We need at least one Sheng player for the band.
- 'One Month One Talk' series

on 'Medical Malpractice' at 3pm on 2/26 (next Sun). He is kindly offering the lunch
